Downtown Daquiri
You may have seen this kitchen featured on the Magnolia Network's “In With the Old”, season 5, episode 12 “Detroit’s Downtown Foursquare”. Although it was a big challenge, we were so excited to have the opportunity to bring this 1915 home back to life. It had been abandoned and wasn’t in the best shape with a kitchen that did not function for today’s way of life and appliances. By opening up the kitchen into the dining room and closing in an old exterior pantry door, it allowed for a more ideal layout for cooking, cleaning, and storage. We salvaged existing wood within the house to create open shelves under the upper cabinets, a vintage touch that worked with the era of the house. Using inspiration from Detroit’s historic Guardian building, we thought to cover the hood vent with ceramic geometric tile that can be seen from the front entryway and gives guests a bold and colorful first impression. The blue cabinets bring color to the dark stained original floors and brighten it up. Keeping the exposed chimney brick also gives additional character to this kitchen.
